St Edward's in the Community

Serving The Community

St Edward's College is a Christian Community, built on the values of the founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Blessed Edmund Rice. These values can be summarised as sharing the love of God, justice, concern for the poor and disadvantaged and empowerment through education. The College itself was founded in 1853 by Father James Nugent, initially as the Catholic Institute, in Liverpool and became St. Edward's Colleg in 1920. Father Nugent himself was a man of immense compassion who worked tirelessly throughout his life to care for the poor and less fortunate. The values of the College are embedded in the principles of these two men - community, commitment, caring and striving for success.

The spirit of Edmund Rice and James Nugent is borne out by the large numbers of pupils and staff who engage in community and charity work. St Edward's has built up a strong tradition of working with physically handicapped and disadvantaged children and adults through the SVP Volunteer programme and Lourdes Group who visit Lourdes each year with the HCPT and Sunday Club.

Pupils have the opportunity to take part in a variety of other community and charity activities throughout their College careers including; the annual Edmund Rice Run, supporting the Fairtrade organisation, supporting CAFOD and fundraising through initiatives such as Light a Light and the annual Balloon Race. Special charity events such as Stars in their Eyes are a highlight of each year.

Community Use

The College currently opens its doors to the community at weekends and in the evenings, when local residents have access to the school's sports facilities (including swimming pool, sports hall, dance classes and astroturf pitches). Sports facilities have been used on a regular basis by a number of local clubs, including West Derby Hockey Club, Everton Swimming Association and St Edward's Old Boys Rugby Club. A group of disabled adults attend Sunday Club where they are entertained by our sixth form pupils each Sunday afternoon. The College also provides the College Hall as a venue for the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra to rehearse and perform.
