Edmund Rice Run
The first Edmund Rice Run was held on the feast of Corpus Christi in June 1990. This day was a school feast day holiday. About 50 people came into school, celebrated mass in the Ley Hall and walked down to Croxteth Country Park to do the 10k course. It was simply a CAFOD Run at that stage. The year after, it became the Makeni Run and the money went to the Christian Brothers in Sierra Leone, a very poor country in tropical West Africa. The Run was organised in response to a pastoral letter from the Archbishop saying that all young Catholic children should be given the chance to engage in charitable works.
Many years later, the annual Run figures just as prominently in our College calendar and nearly one thousand pupils (and a great number of staff) charge around the course in a spirit of community and with a fixed sense of purpose. Although shortened in length to 4k, the Run still provides a fun-filled afternoon underpinned by the knowledge that each year thousands of pounds are raised for a charity close to the heart and spirit of our College community. Old Edwardians will remember with great fondness such afternoons of joy and camaderie even when, at times, the weather conspired to steal the happiness of the occasion. Not a chance!
