Cricket
Cricket at St Edward's College is going from strength to strength. The College has five teams that play their games in the Trinity term with most teams starting their training towards the end of the Lent term. Pupils of all abilities are welcome to attend training during the week. Training for some teams takes place before school and other sessions take place after school. Specialist skills sessions are held during lunch and many boys attend. The College has outdoor and indoor training facilities and a number of modern training aids including a bowling machine and state of the art slip catching cradle. Pupils learn the fundamentals of the sport, with a large focus on participation and fair play instilled into each squad. The College has improving links with local clubs and many boys who start playing cricket at the College are introduced to local clubs and represent the city.
Each team is coached by two members of staff and play between 10-12 games a season. Games are played during the week with two block Saturday fixtures against local schools. Each team enters the Lancashire and City Cup where the College traditionally achieves great success. In 2009 all teams reached the semi-finals of the City Cup with two teams getting to the final and the under 14’s winning the title of City Champions. Over the last few years the under 14’s cricket team has gone on tour to London and the South East of England. This tour has proved to be a huge success with the boys learning about the rich history of the game by visiting Lord's Cricket Ground, developing their skills, playing against different schools and bonding as a team. Cricket at St Edward's is an ideal opportunity to for the boys to learn and enjoy our national game.
