Special Educational Needs
Every pupil at St Edward’s College, including pupils with special educational needs, has an entitlement to fulfil his or her potential. This is achieved by ensuring the wellbeing of all pupils in relation to: being healthy; staying safe; enjoying and achieving; making a positive contribution and achieving social and economic wellbeing.
These wellbeing outcomes are embraced in every aspect of a pupil’s life at St Edward’s College: personalized teaching and learning approaches; access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) across the curriculum; flexible learning pathways and out-of-hours learning activities such as subject lunch-time clubs; support for emotional wellbeing; flexible timetables and curriculum; assessment for learning which engages pupils in having a say about their progress and Special Educational Needs provision; and partnership with parents, other schools, the local community and the Local Authority.
Underpinning the learning of all pupils with Special Educational Needs at St Edward’s College is appropriate differentiation in the classroom and with the setting of homework. Additional support within the classroom can be provided by a Learning Support Assistant. Learning Support Assistants can also support pupils outside of the classroom individually or within a small group.
St Edward’s College works closely with a range of outreach support services, including the Local Authority’s Special Educational Needs Integrated Support Service and Liverpool’s Educational Psychology Service. Many of these outreach support services provide regular training to both teaching and non-teaching staff.
