St Edward’s College offers an inspiring and challenging Catholic education to over 1200 children from across the City and further afield. The priorities of serving the community, demonstrating commitment, caring for others and striving for success, which underpin the education provided to all pupils, are based firmly on the values promoted by Blessed Edmund Rice, the founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers and Father James Nugent who, in 1853, established what was later to become St Edward’s College. Pupils and staff are guided by the ethos of the College in the way they conduct their lives and relate to one another – all pupils are encouraged to work hard, respect themselves and respect others.
The school is an Academy and is located on a spacious campus in East Liverpool. It is the Choir School to the Metropolitan cathedral of Christ the King and provides both boy and girl choristers. There is a strong tradition of music at the College and, each year, a number of pupils are admitted to Year Seven on Specialist Musicians Places.
The College is one of a handful of schools to have been judged by Ofsted as Outstanding in three consecutive inspections. It has dual specialist status in Languages and the Performing, is categorised as a High Performing Specialist School and recently became involved in the delivery of the national Raising Achievement Partnership Programme.
Academic standards and expectations are high and the curriculum offers breadth, choice and challenge at all key stages. There are over 300 pupils in Sixth Form who are able to choose from 27 A Level subjects and many of whom proceed to study at some of the country’s most prestigious universities. In 2010, five pupils successfully gained places at Oxbridge and Cambridge Colleges.
All pupils are encouraged to take part in activities outside the classroom and a broad range of curriculum enhancing and extra-curricular activities are offered with pupils representing the College at local, regional and national level in a range of sports, music and other cultural activities. The curriculum is enriched by an extensive array of school trips that are offered to pupils to promote learning and enjoyment beyond the classroom.
The school not only takes pride in the academic success and achievement of its pupils but also in their high standards of discipline and morality. These are promoted through an effective and well established pastoral system (including a lay Chaplain), with a strong emphasis placed on care, guidance and support and the emotional and spiritual development of all pupils.
St Edward’s plays a prominent role within the community. Each year, many pupils take part in voluntary and charity work, the school’s sports facilities are available for community use during the evenings and weekends and the school has fostered close links with neighbouring primary and secondary schools, industry (including Getrag-Ford), the City’s universities, Liverpool Children’s Hospital (Alder Hey) and the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra.
