Physical Education
At St Edwards’s College, the physical education of pupils is achieved through combining physical activity with the mental processes of decision making, selecting, refining, judging, shaping, adjusting and adapting. Physical Education allows pupils to develop qualities such as commitment, integrity, fairness, enthusiasm and desire for quality and success. These aims relate to and uphold the Christian principles of the College community.
The PE department is a successful, forward looking department that utilises talented, specialist PE teachers. Former pupils who have achieved the highest levels of sporting performance include Kyran Bracken (2003 Rugby World Cup winner) and Robert O’Donnell (Sale Sharks) in rugby and Michael Rock (2008 Beijing Olympics) in Swimming.
The PE department strives to achieve high levels of physical activity and skill development through a challenging and interesting curriculum. The curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to play and improve in a range of games, including hockey, rugby, netball, basketball, cricket, tennis, lacrosse, table tennis, football and rounders. A number of activities are also offered within PE, including dance, gymnastics, fitness training, climbing, swimming, personal survival, athletics and cross country.
Throughout the year, pupils have the opportunity to take part in a host of intra- school sports competitions and, during Lent term 2009, 80 Year 9 pupils participated in a multi-sports event at Liverpool John Moores University campus.
For pupils who wish to develop their interest in PE through academic qualifications, short and long course GCSE and A Level PE are offered at Key Stages 4 and 5 respectively and pupils who show particular leadership qualities are guided through the Youth Sport Foundation leadership awards such as the JSLA, CSLA and Day Leaders awards.
The department benefits from access to extensive facilities, including an indoor swimming pool, floodlit Astroturf, state of the art dance studio and newly refurbished changing rooms.
