Thought for the Day

Monday 27 March

Psalm 30- Today's Responsorial Psalm
Save me in your love, O Lord.

Release me from the snares they have hidden for you are my refuge, Lord. Into your hands I commend my spirit. It is you who will redeem me, Lord.

R. Save me in your love, O Lord.

I have heard the slander of the crowd, fear is all around me, as they plot together against me, as they plan to take my life.

R. Save me in your love, O Lord.

But as for me, I trust in you, Lord, I say: “You are my God. My life is in your hands, deliver me from the hands of those who hate me.”

R. Save me in your love, O Lord.

Lord – we place our lives into your hands so that you may guide us through the turbulence of this world, and comfort us in our distress. We continue to pray for those who were caught up in the terror on Westminster Bridge; for the people of Mosul caught up in the horror of war; and for all who are seeking refuge and release from the raging fires of conflict. Lord in your Mercy, hear our prayer.

Psalm 106
An extract

We have sinned, even as our fathers did;
We have done wrong and acted wickedly.
When our fathers were in Egypt,
They gave no thought to your miracles;

An extract from today's Psalm 46.

God is our refuge and strength,
An ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
And the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
Though it's waters roar and foam
And the mountains quake with their surging.

(...)
Come and see the works of the Lord,
The desolations he has brought to the ends of the earth;
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
He burns the shields with fire.
Be still and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.

Lord, be with us during adversity;
Make your presence known to us always.
Lord, in your mercy ,hear our prayer.

Wednesday 29 March

An extract from today's holy Gospel according to John 5

Some men came carrying a paralytic man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. When they could not find a way because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven."
The Pharisees began thinking to themselves ,"Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?"

Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, " Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? Which is easier to say, 'Your sins are forgiven 'or 'Get up and walk'?
But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins..."

He then tells the man to get up, pick up his mat and go home; the man does and Jesus , as far as they are concerned , has committed blasphemy, which will ultimately lead to his arrest, trials and execution on the Cross.

Thursday 30 March

Today's Responsorial Psalm
Taste and see that the Lord is good.

I sought the Lord and he answered me;
He delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant;
Their faces never covered with shame.

This poor man called and the Lord heard him;
He saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him
And he delivers them.

Taste and see that the Lord is good;
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
Fear the Lord, you his saints,
For those who fear him lack nothing.
The lions may grow weak and hungry,
But those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
And his ears are attentive to their cry;
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
To cut off the memory of them from the face of the earth.

(...)
The Lord redeems his servants;
No -one will be condemned who takes refuge in him.
Psalm 34

Friday 31 March

They did not remember your many kindnesses,

And they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea.

Yet he saved them for his name's sake,
To make his mighty power known.
He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up:
He led them through the depths as through a desert .
He saved them from the hand of the foe;
From the hand of the enemy he redeemed them.

The waters covered their adversaries;
Not one of them survived.
Then they believed his promises and sang his praises.

Lord, help us to believe in your powerful love always.
We make our prayer , through Christ, our Lord.
Amen
