Dr Joe Chamberlain, 1950-1957

12 March 2010

Why are we so special?

At this year’s College Dinner there will be several groups celebrating one sort of anniversary or another. One group will be of those marking the 60th anniversary of their school career in the second form and there’s no doubt that this is a very special group.

First, we were all born in the last year of peace leading up to the Second World War, which was also the academic year in which St. Edward’s College moved to Sandfield Park.

Then at the exact mid-point of the twentieth century we all started our education in the main school.

Then when we left in 1957, we were the last age group to be eligible for National Service – was that a stroke of luck or what? Mind you, some of us escaped by going on to further education.

We have already celebrated a fiftieth anniversary at the dinner in 2007 being that many years since our general release. We managed to attract 20 or so survivors at that dinner and can claim to have started this trend for mega-anniversaries. See our website at:

www.stedwards.110mb.com to read all about us and others.

I’m sure we can beat that figure of 20 for this year’s dinner, especially if the silent lurkers come out of the shadows.
