Old Edwardian honoured for service in Afghanistan
20 October 2011
Lance Corporal Alex Morgan (OE 1995 - 2002), of 1st Battalion The Irish Guards, has been awarded a Joint Commander's Commendation in recognition of his contribution to the Battalion's 2010/2011 tour of Afghanistan.
Alex, who patrols Afghanistan talking to locals and gathering vital intelligence, completed an intensive course in the native Pashto tongue, allowing him to communicate.
Alex's citation described him as having 'continuously acted in a manner well above his rank', and having 'undoubtedly saved lives and enabled relationships to be built that without his skills would never have existed.'
His parents, Shaun and Brenda Morgan, wrote to the Principal to thank the College and staff for the 'direction and grounding' provided to Alex during his time here. They particularly thanked the Principal, Miss Murphy and Mr Tedford. Miss Murphy was Alex's French teacher and Mr and Mrs Morgan believe his ability to speak Pashto stems from his knowledge of French.
Mr and Mrs Morgan hope that the news of Alex's achievements 'may encourage other pupils to realize their potential'.
