On Friday 12 March, Sir Terry Leahy, Chief Executive of Tesco and Old Edwardian, opened the College’s new regular lecture series ‘The Roche Society Lectures’ with a talk on ‘Sustainable Consumption’. The lecture was chaired by Sir Brian Pearse (former Chief Executive of Midland Bank and Old Edwardian) and was a very successful event.
The Society is named in honour of Brother Roche, in recognition of the great contribution made to the College by the Christian Brothers. Current pupils, parents, former pupils and friends were in attendance and will be invited to hear nationally and internationally renowned individuals speak on issues of global importance in upcoming lectures. The lecture was followed by a 20 minute Question & Answer Session, a choral vote of thanks from the College Consort and refreshments in the Dining Hall.
In his presentation, Sir Terry set out how Tesco came to identify climate change as a strategic issue for the business, how it formulated and developed its strategy, the progress it has made to date in meeting its ambitious long-range targets, and how Tesco believes that, in the end, consumers will be the key to defeating climate change and launching green consumption as perhaps the defining driver of the 21st century economy.
