Kanvilli High School

In 2010 the College was twinned with Kanvilli High School in Tamale, Northern Ghana.  Our focus initially was on gathering information; finding out about the school, the local area and the important work the Christian Brothers are doing in Western Africa.  Since then, things have gone from strength to strength with members of staff having the opportunity to visit the school during Lent half-term and Year 13 gap year students offered the chance to visit for six weeks after leaving school.

Kanvilli High School is a very special place.  The pupils are friendly, enthusiastic and keen to learn.  The staff are warm, open and passionate about education.  Each day starts with a prayer of thanks for the things they have and the opportunities available to them.

A visit to the school leaves you feeling invigorated; there is much that we can learn from our colleagues and peers in Kanvilli about the things that are really important in life!  In return, we can provide them with the facilities and resources needed to give them the best education possible.

Since 2010 the College staff and pupils have worked energetically to raise funds to send to Kanvilli and to raise awareness amongst pupils.  Out of uniform days, cake sales, sponsored silences and car washes have all raised much needed funds.  Whilst the annual Edmund Rice Run and “Run to Ghana” gives all at the College the chance to come together and show publicly our commitment to supporting the pupils and staff of Kanvilli.

We were overjoyed to send £10,000 to the school in September of 2012.  This money was put to the best possible use; buying uniforms for the poorest pupils, building a multi-purpose sports pitch, providing new drinking buckets and a loud-speaker address system, as well as buying textbooks and resources to incentivise and reward the hardest working pupils in the school.  Most importantly perhaps, the money was also used to buy life-changing medicines for two pupils who were very sick.

All at St Edward’s are committed to continue to fundraise for Kanvilli, so the school can continue to improve and develop its facilities. All ideas to raise money are welcomed!  We look forward to sending more funds over to Kanvilli and wait in anticipation to witness how the small things we do to raise money can have a massive impact on the lives and education of our friends in Ghana.
