Physical Education is of value to all pupils as a means of personal development.

Alongside its academic tradition, the College boasts a long history of sporting achievement. Pupils take part in competitions on a weekly basis, in fixtures against schools throughout the North West and in regional and national contests in many of the sports offered at the College.

The splendid facilities and setting enable pupils to enjoy a range of activities. These include the principle winter sports of hockey, rugby, cross-country, swimming and netball and the principle summer sports of tennis, rounders, athletics and cricket.

Pupils are given the opportunity to compete in these traditional sports, but can also participate in a broad range of activities through attending extra-curricular clubs, making full use of the excellent sporting facilities. Facilities at the College include a 25 metre swimming pool, floodlit astroturf pitches, sports hall, running track, dance studio and climbing walls.

Pupils also take part in outdoor education such as hill walking, climbing, canoeing and other activities which form part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

There are opportunities to go on trips regularly throughout the year, with Year 7 pupils recently attending an English Ballet performance. There have been many exotic sports tours over the past few years to far flung places such as New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Barbados being visited, along with trips to some closer European countries.

Recently, GCSE pupils have had the opportunity to listen to Olympic Swimmer and Old Edwardian, Michael Rock who spoke to them about his training for the Olympics for 2012. Michael is just one of a number of Old Edwardians who have gone on to great sporting triumph once leaving the College, with other notable successes including Rugby Union players Kyran Bracken and Rob O’Donnell.

Present pupils of the College are also enjoying the limelight, with pupils achieving national recognition for their respective sport, including Verity McCoy who competed with the GB Water Polo Squad at the inaugural European Olympic Games in 2015.
