Rugby
Boys have been playing rugby union at St Edward’s since 1939 when pupils who were evacuated to Llanelli in Wales, enjoyed playing the sport so much they brought it back to Liverpool with them!
Rugby at St Edward's continues to provide a focus for many boys throughout the school. The College runs at least one team per year group - U12A & B, U13, U14, U15, U16 and First XV. Training takes place before and after school, with fixtures played mostly on Saturday mornings against others schools across the North West during Advent and Lent terms. There are also midweek friendly and cup fixtures at different times of the season.
Teams are entered in the Lancashire Cup at all age groups, the national NatWest Schools Cup at Under 15 and Under 18. In addition, and during the latter stages of the season, there are a variety of sevens competitions to compete in, including Birkenhead School, Wirral GS, Stonyhurst, and in certain cases the prestigious Rosslyn Park Sevens.
The College also has a tradition of touring and hosting touring teams - teams have travelled to Scotland, Ireland, Germany and New Zealand whilst teams have been hosted from Scotland, the United States of America, Argentina and Isle of Man. More recently, the senior rugby squad have been an integral part of the annual Senior Sports Tour which is now much anticipated by all.
At the end of each season a rugby awards ceremony takes place when individual players and teams are recognised for their effort and achievement throughout the season.
